The Life of BI: Complete--Bobbi Ingliss, BI, is an anomaly. She was born bi-gender to a mother who abandoned her in the hospital and a gambler, alcoholic father who tries to do his best, but when he dies leaving his teenage daugher/son alone, she must fend for herself and find her place in the world. She is also a genius and more mature that her years would let on. THIS IS NOT A BOOK FOR KIDS. IT DEALS IN FRANK, ADULT SUBJECT MATTER. The book includes some of BI's own words from her diary as a teenage girl, a memory she shares of her young adult life when she has a crisis of identity, and a biography of her adult life as she makes peace with herself and the world at large, finds true love, and lives her life trying to help others. Some material deals with gender identity, parents who think someone else can "fix" a child who doesn't fit the mold they think they should inhabit, and features a few, mild, scenes of a sexual nature. |
Tom Hudson loves the books in the Perry Rhodan series, an ongoing space opera written in Germany since the early 1960s encompassing a couple thousand volums to date. In the U.S. Forest J Ackerman and his wife, Wendayne, translated about 140 of the first 150 books, but gave up before the thirid cycle (each 50 books long) was completed. Tom spent a couple months translating and "Englishizing" the final books in Cycle 3 and published them for his own enjoyment. With no right to even reprint the German editions, he is stuck sitting on them for now, but is willing to share a fun little excerpt with any interested parties. The following is a side-by-side example of the German to English literal translation and what he eventually wrote using that as a starting point (which is what Ackerman, et al, did.) It may be interesting to note Tom doesn't speak or read German! The basic translation was done with an application on the Internet. CLICK HERE to view a short demo of that frustrating experience.
